They’ve done it. One of the most dominant trebles ever has been completed.
Jupp Heynckes and Bayern Munich defeated Stuttgart 3-2 in the DFB-Pokal final to complete their first-ever continental treble. They also won the German Bundesliga by 25 points and the Champions League by defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final.
Mario Gomez scored two and Thomas Mueller grabbed a penalty for Bayern, who were up 3-0 before Stuttgart began their comeback.
The treble is the seventh in European history. They’re completed once a decade until Barcelona and Inter did it back-to-back in the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 seasons. It’s the 19th continental treble worldwide. No club has ever done it twice.
Considering the margins of defeat Bayern Munich handed out, it’s certainly one of the most dominant ever. Often, cup runs sap a team of their ability to perform in the league, or visa versa. However Bayern crushed all in their path in every competition.
The Bavarians ran through the Champions League, scoring 31 goals and conceding 11. They slammed Barcelona in the semifinals by an aggregate of 7-0. After squeaking by on away goals against Arsenal in the Round of 16, they allowed just one goal over their final five matches against Juventus, Barca, and Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern completed the DFB-Pokal run having scored 20 goals and conceding three over six matches. They didn’t even concede a goal until the semifinals!
And then we come to the Bundesliga. Bayern won the league by 25 points, setting a new Bundesliga record points total with 91 points. They reached that total by winning 29, drawing four, and losing just one. They went wire-to-wire and secured the title with 6 matches to go.
Mind you, they finished second in all three of these competitions last season.
What they accomplished this season is incredible, and every number possibly pulled from it is outstanding. Heynckes will be leaving Bayern Munich not just having completed an outstanding feat, but also having built a possible dynasty. The team is set up perfectly for success in the near future.
